Parthenope is a woman who bears the name of her city. Is she a siren or a myth? In Greek myth, Parthenope is a siren who committed suicide after failing to charm Odysseus. Her body was brought by the tide to the place where Castel dell'Ovo is now built, and for this she gave the name to the city that would later become Naples, Napoli. In the film, Parthenope is the embodiment of the city of Naples. Heat Written by Peter Gregson Starring Peter Gregson, Warren Zielinski, Magdalena Filipczak, Laurie Anderson, Ashok Klouda. A little disappointed with his last film È STATA LA MANO DI DIO, where PARTHENOPE reminded me of what had touched me so much in Sorrentino’s films. Everything is beautiful, from the city of Naples and its pristine water to the still unknown goddess Celeste da Porta. Add to that Fellini-like shots and Lele Marchitelli’s wonderful jazz soundtrack: you get perfection. The beauty of life in its meaninglessness… You might think he’s making another GRANDE BELLEZZA, but that’s not all. Sorrentino manages to surprise us once again with a new take on what is ultimately the same subject. The film asks questions without answering them, as if to say that we should just stop looking for answers and start observing the beauty of the world as it is. As a result, the viewer doesn’t leave the theater with answers, but with an interesting glimpse into life and ultimately death… Oh, and I almost forgot, the film stars Gary Oldman. Although his screen time is limited, he manages to give a great performance. Then he pulls away, as if urging us to enjoy the film he made us (by his presence in the cast) go see. So I know not everyone will like it – some scenes are quite strange, I must admit – but in my opinion this film gave me everything I did (and didn’t expect) when I entered the theater. I sincerely hope/think it will win the Palme d'Or.Grazie Paolo 😉
